Cataracts

Most cataracts are found during an eye examination by optometrists and are referred sometimes directly to the hospital. The procedure to replace the lens with a plastic implant normally only requires out-patient treatment and there is little or no inconvenience....

Dyslexia and Visual Stress

Dyslexia may be explained as a difficulty that affects the ability to learn to read and spell correctly. Dyslexics find it difficult to process word sounds. Problems are thought to occur from poor development of language associated processing areas of the brain.

Eye Care in the UK

Eyecare in Great Britain provides around 17.5 million sight tests each year of which around 12 million are paid for by the Government. It is important to make regular check ups part of you and your family’s lifestyle.

Getting a better view of the retina for earlier detection and better control of disorders

Up until recently the best an optometrist or ophthalmologist could achieve with a handheld indirect ophthalmoscope was a limited view of your retina (fundus) after full dilation of your pupils. If associated with other problems of the lens media like cataracts this view was limited still further.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is caused by raised pressure in the chamber of the eye immediately in front of the lens and behind the cornea. There is a continuous flux of fresh fluid being produced in the eye and old fluid being drained out which normally remains in balance.

How often should I have an Eye Test?

You will normally be guided by your optometrist as to how often you should have an eye test. But as a general rule two years is regarded as a safe interval. Those with chronic eye problems or fast changing prescriptions will require a yearly test, and may be recalled more often if the optometrist advises.

NHS Entitlement

A sight examination is paid for by the NHS for everyone 60 years and over, those whose close relatives have been diagnosed as having glaucoma, all children under 16, or under 19 if attending full time education.

The Effects on Vision by Diabetes

There is a predicted dramatic increase in Type 2 Diabetes in the population in addition to those earlier in life with insulin dependent type 1 diabetes. Having diabetes does not necessarily mean that your sight will be affected but if it is early diagnosis and treatment is essential to stop reduction or loss of vision.

Types of Opticians

Registered Opticians are governed by statutory law under the auspices of the General Optical Council. All professionals have undertaken a lengthy training process to degree level and have also had to complete further professional examinations before being permitted to practise.

What is an eye examination?

When you have your eyes examined the process will take around 25 minutes dependent on your age and specific needs. Your optician will ask questions about your health and your close relatives’ eye health as well as noting any symptoms. They will asses how you are getting on with any current spectacles and the type of lens you are wearing.
